Full of early California history after a fast start, thoughtful mid and excellent closing! Macnally’s finish as a woodsman himself is gratifying to learn.
Racism is a powerful drug, isn't it? It's chilling to see Muir, such a keen observer of the natural world, be absolutely incapable of seeing the humanity of native people. Excited to read the book. You are such a beautiful writer!
Wonderfully written explanation of how you came to write "Cast out of Eden," Robert. I just pre-ordered a copy, and I strongly recommend that others do so as well. As I know from other venues, you are a wonderful writer, observer and student of nature and of human nature. I can't wait to read the book, although I know it will be full of terrifying details. But knowledge is strength; always preferable to ignorance or misperception.
This book reads much more seemly than do these outlandish quotes of McNally. Native Americans were deprived of thousands of miles in their time, confined to reservations and are now belittled by McNally! The book is well worth reading to the extent it deals with the life of Muir but sadly regresses within its concluding pages. Sad!!

Thanks so much, Dashka. And that's a good take on racism as a drug. Believing you and your kind are superior produces a high -- and a world of hurt.

Many thanks, Chris, for this comment and the book order.
